What is a QR Code?
Take a look around, almost everyone has a mobile phone. There are almost 300 million cell phones in the United States alone. The next time you are out, take a look at the people and notice what they are doing. I'll bet you'll see that most people are using a mobile phone in one way or another. They (and you) are probably not just talking on the phone but are tweeting, text messaging, surfing the net, getting email and updating Facebook.

So what is that ink blot on the top left corner of this page? It's called a QR code (Quick Response). These codes have been around for over 10 years. Developed by a company in Japan, it is widely used overseas for inventory control, marketing and disaster relief efforts.

QR codes are two-dimensional bar codes. It is called two-dimensional because it can carry data both horizontally and vertically. Each code includes three squares in the corners that tell the scanner how to orient the data. The QR code above, for example, contains a link to our web site. Scan the QR code with your internet enabled mobile phone and you will be taken to our web site. This is a simple example of the new technologies that are available to you to promote your your business. The uses for this technology are endless and very exciting. US companies such as Best Buys, Verizon, Papa John's, Coke and Google are now using QR codes as part of their marketing plans. If you watched Wimbledon last year you might have seen the QR code on the wall of the center court stadium.

The beauty of the internet and its associated technologies is that you can compete with the 'Big Boys' using the Internet to connect to potentially hundreds of millions of customers! Compared to other forms of mass marketing, you can do this for peanuts! Combine viral marketing with your existing print marketing and direct mail marketing, and you'll reap dividends by reaching a sea of potential customers! With QR codes and viral marketing you'll be able to track the results of your marketing campaign, not just wonder how many people read your postcard. Hard analytics data that will tell you if your internet marketing efforts have been a good investment. QR codes are not meant to discount the value of print marketing, but to increase your reach to potential customers.

Imagine you are on a pleasant drive on a Sunday afternoon. You see a house for sale. On the "for sale" sign is a QR code. You scan the QR code on the sign using your Blackberry. You are then taken on a virtual tour of the home on your phone while you are sitting in the driveway. You get all the information; number of bedrooms, baths, the realtor's contact information and asking price. All while sitting in your car! Or, if you manage a Resturant, you can place these codes on your menus to offer discounts or advertise specials. A customer scans the QR code on your menu and is taken to a discount coupon or the special of the day you are offering! The uses are limited only by your imagination! And the real beauty is, your potential customers have all the information stored in their phone! They are, in essence taking your sign, flyer or menu home with them. It's always with them until they delete it from the phone.
